This dissertation remedies the lack of substantial discourse within architectural theory on the subject of museum architecture. It both weakens and nuances the popular provocation that museums need to be built 'for art.' It doesn't offer an architecture-critical discussion of recent museum buildings, but an art- and architecture-theoretical analysis of the museum institution. By means of an analysis of those artistic practices that have led a critical investigation of the conditions and modalities of art's public disclosure in the space of the museum, it demonstrates that the role and meaning of architecture in the museum does not lie within the recreation of the place of an artwork's origin, but rather in the signification of the place of its staging.
