The finite element method is applied to elastic-plastic plateudbending analysis. Square plates are divided into square elementsudwith corner nodes at which plastic rotations are introduced wheneverudthe internal principal generalized stress states satisfy a squareudyield criterion. The analytical response of plates and. slabs toudmonotonically increasing applied load is traced in a step-by-stepudmanner by digital computer. A complete history of displacements andudgeneralized stresses is developed through the elastic phase to collapse.udResults obtained from experiments on plates and slabs are comparedudwith those produced analytically in order to assess the validity ofudthe finite element model.
