Nowadays, the studies of episodic processes in theudocean is manly done through the innovative facilities called oceanudobservatories which provide unprecedented amounts of powerudand two-way bandwidth to access and control sensor networks inudthe oceans. The most capable ocean observatories are designedudaround a submarine fiber optic/power cable connecting one orudmore seafloor science nodes to the terrestrial power grid andudcommunications backhaul. In a network consisting of tens, udhundreds or thousands of marine sensors, manual configurationudand integration becomes very challenging. Methods are requiredudwhich support this task to minimize the administration efforts.udThis paper addresses this issue and presents an approach for theudautomatic discovery of marine sensors in ocean observatories. Theudwork provides a needed reference implementation of PUCK overudTCP/IP, and suggests the potential of a set of protocols andudstandards that could realize true end to end “Plug and Work”udcapability for sensor networks.
