The architecture and protocols forudauthentication, authorization, and accountingud(AAA) are one of the most important designudconsiderations in the next generation wirelessudnetworks. Many advances have been made toudexploit the benefits of the current systems basedudon the protocol Remote Authentication Dial InudUser Service (RADIUS) protocol, and its evolutionudinto the more secure, robust, and scalableudDiameter protocol. Diameter is the protocol ofudchoice for the IP multimedia subsystem (IMS)udarchitecture, the core technology for the nextudgeneration networks. It is envisioned thatudDiameter will be widely used in various wired andudwireless systems to facilitate robust and seamlessudAAA. In this paper, we provide an overview of theudDiameter protocol, and short summary of theudcurrent and future trends related to the DiameterbasedudAAA systems.ud
