En nyere bevegelse kalt ”Lean Startup” mener de kan nettopp det (Ries, 2011). Oppstart av en ny virksomhet blir ofte forbundet med suksess eller konkurs. I en årrekke har man fulgt en kjent formel for oppstart av nye virksomheter. Først skriver man en forretningsplan, presenterer forretningsplanen for investorer, samler et team, introduserer et produkt og forsøker å selge det. Dessverre er ikke oddsene for suksess de høyeste, og de fleste oppstartsbedrifter opplever å gå konkurs. Her mener Lean Startup bevegelsen at metodikken deres kan bidra til reduksjon av usikkerhet og risiko knyttet til oppstart av nye virksomheter. På den måten vil man kunne redusere antall oppstartspedrifter som går konkurs, og samtidig påvirke markedsøkonomien på en positiv måte (Blank, 2013). Jeg valgte derfor å gjennomføre en studie hvor jeg med min egen forretningsidé tester om Lean Startup-metodikken fungerer i praksis. Lean Satrup-metodikken baserer seg på at man med en forretningsidé, strategisk forretningsmodell, minste levedyktig produkt skal gjøre seg noen antagelser basert på visjonen for å utlede hypoteser. Hypotesene skal man teste på potensielle kunder gjennom en Build-Mesaure-Learn læringssirkel. Gjennom læringssirkelen vil man finne fakta som støtter et valg om å fortsette, eller gjøre en større endring (Ries, 2011). I denne prosessen benytter jeg meg av aksjonsforskning som metode, hvor jeg lager nettsider, prototype og produktbrosjyre for testing av hypoteser i mine eksperimenter. Hovedfunnene fra denne forskningsprosessen ble som mine antagelser, der mine hypoteser ble bekreftet. Lean Startup-metodikken førte til kvalifiserte tilbakemeldinger, samtidig som den både motiverte og førte til handling. Likevel stiller jeg meg noen spørsmål når det gjelder hvor ny og banebrytende denne metodikken egentlig er? Samtidig mener jeg også det er flere punkter hvor Lean Startup-metodikken ikke er klar nok, sammenlignet med andre entreprenørskapsmetodikker. This master thesis discusses a new force that has emerged, one methodology that can make the process of starting a company less risky by providing validated feedback, even before there is any real product. The methodology is called the “Lean Startup”. Most startups suffer a fatal setback. According to the decades-old formula, you write a business plan, pitch it to investors, assemble a team, introduce a new product, and start selling. Unfortunately the odds are normally not with you. Most startups fail due to the conditions of extreme uncertainty. The Lean startup methodology will however help reducing all that uncertainty. Reduced uncertainty means a reduced startup failure rate and could have profound economic consequences (Blank, 2013 & Ries, 2011). Due to this new Lean Startup methodology, I decided to test if it actually works in real life, using my own business idea. Different from the decades-old formula, the Lean Startup methodology favors experimentation, customer feedback, and iterative design. To start learning it all begins with a clear hypothesis that makes predictions about what supposed to happen in your experiments based on your vision. Then you “get out of the building” and start approaching customers. The product used in experiments should only be a minimum viable product, and hypothesis should be summarized in a strategic business model. This is called the Build-Measure-Learn feedback loop, which will provide you with validated data for making up a decision about whether to pivot or persevere (Ries, 2011). To test this methodology, the research method I decided to use is action research method where I developed a webpage, product brochure and a prototype to conduct experiments and test my hypotheses.The main findings in my research were as predicted in my experiments. When using the Lean Startup approach all my hypothesis got validated. I therefore decided to persevere based on validated feedback from real potential customers. Looking back I would have to confirm that the Lean Startup methodology did provide me with validated feedback. Also it had a very motivating effect, putting thoughts into action with the “get out of the building” approach. I do ask my self though, how new and radical the lean startup methodology really is? Also I mean that the “Lean Startup” is not clear enough on some points, compared to other startup- methodologies.
