The 17-acre FMC (Fresno Plant) site is an active pesticide manufacturing facilityin Fresno, California. The site overlies two unconsolidated sand zones that are a potential source of ground water, and have been contaminated by site operations. Since 1931, various agricultural product operations have been conducted onsite including sulfur processing, and fertilizer and pesticide manufacturing. The waste disposal practices have led to contamination of onsite soil and ground water. Investigations by FMC under EPA oversight from 1989 to 1991 characterized and quantified site contamination, affected media, and probable source areas. The Record of Decision (ROD) provides for remediation of onsite source areas and restoration of ground water as a final remedy. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil and ground water are organochlorine and organophosphorous pesticides; although VOCs including PCE, TCE, toluene, and xylenes; other organics including dioxin, PAHs, and phenols; and metals including arsenic, chromium, and lead also are present. The selected remedial action for this site is included.
