The problem to be addressed in the project is that of developing a methodologyfor designing and evaluating alternative ways of providing a circulator service within and to/from various destinations in a typical MDC. Two main types of transit technology will be examined, the local circulator bus and the automated people-mover system. Other components that may be included in some designs include moving beltways and bus transit intercept stations. The methods will be developed in the context of a hypothetical but realistic major diversified center that will be constructed by making a composite of several of the MAC's located in the Seattle metropolitan area. It will also have a 'surrounding area' composed mainly of low and medium density housing, to represent typical housing densities in western American cities. The composite will be constructed so that it can be expanded or reduced in scale so that several type of 'what-if' questions can be addressed. The project would focus on the development of generic methods that can be used to design and evaluate MDC circulation (to/from and within) solutions for any particular MDC of interest. Primary attention would be given to the development of planning and design methods and techniques that can support a sketch planning process aimed at identifying a few high performance alternatives for more detailed investigation with one or more computer models that can simulate the actual operational performance of an alternative under various loading conditions.
