Susceptibility of Lodgepole Pine to Western Gall Rust Within the Middle ColumbiaRiver System

Seedlings from 107 populations of lodgepole pine were inoculated at the beginningof their second year's growth. The overall infection level was 87 percent. Populations varied from 45 to 100 percent infected. Variation for geographic area and elevation was random. The average number of galls was 3.28, and this varied from 0.72 to 6.33. The most susceptible populations were from the northeastern (northwestern Montana) and the southern (southern Idaho) portions of the area sampled.
