Four Corners Archaeological Project. Report Number 23. Historical Archaeological Investigations in the Mariano Spring Vicinity Ute Mountain Ute Reservation Montezuma County, Colorado.

In 1990, Complete Archaeological Service Associates conducted archaeological excavations at three historic sites (5MT2512 Locus C, 5MT10209, and 5MT10212) on Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Lands in southwest Colorado. These sites were excavated as part of a larger mitigation effort for Reach III of the Towaoc Canal Project, the final stage of a three phase project. The Towaoc Canal Project is a major construction feature of the Dolores Project being built by the Bureau of Reclamation. Its purpose is to transport water from the Dolores River to the Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Lands for irrigation on two large tracts of land south of Ute Mountain. The excavations recovered data from historic Native American occupations dating from the early to mid Twentieth Century. This report presents descriptions and interpretations of the excavated sites, results of analyses for artifactual and biocultural remains, oral histories of the investigated area, and a preliminary historic site typology.
