The report explores the feasibility of collecting information about prescribedmedicines taken by residents of nursing and personal care homes, or by residents in facilities for persons with mental retardation. The prescribed medicine data elements needed for analytic purposes and for linkage with other data bases that provide information on related variables such as interactions and drug costs are described. The feasibility study is for the upcoming round three National Medical Expenditures Survey (NMES 3) with the goal of extending collection of data on prescribed medicines to the institutional population and improving the completeness and quality of utilization information collected.
