Flexibility and Emissions Dispatch Benefits of Natural Gas Cofiring in Coal-FiredElectric Generating Plants. Final Report, June 1991-June 1992

The report analyzes the ability of basic gas cofiring in coal-fired electricutility boilers to increase the flexibility of utility operation. Flexibility is defined as the ability of a technology to allow the utility to respond more effectively to market conditions. Decision tree analysis and a probabilistic production costing algorithm were used to calculate the lowest cost operating path based on the characteristics of an actual Midwestern utility. The study showed that cofiring did increase the flexibility of the utility and increased the ability to use emissions dispatch to reduce SO2 emissions.
