The report summarizes the findings of the exploratory research supported by GRIto investigate the feasibility of separating oxygen from air using membranes of mixed conductors. The research leads to (1) successful fabrication of tubes of various mixed conductors with controlled microstructure and with sintered density greater than 95% of theoretical values; (2) design and construction of testing stations featuring reliable control and monitoring of temperature, partial pressure of oxygen, and gas flow rate; and (3) construction of laboratory-prototype oxygen separation devices based on the fabricated tubes. Results indicate that target current densities or oxygen separation rate set by GRI for the project have been equivalently demonstrated. In addition, new approaches to determine transport properties and catalytic activities of various mixed conductors have been introduced.
