Competency-Based Parenting Skills for Handicapped and Special NeedsMothers/Children

The Focus Special Needs Mothers program addressed the needs of this special groupby considering the family as a whole. Mother/participants in the project were required to meet at least three of the following criteria: developmentally delayed, economically deprived, parenting a child who is developmentally delayed, premature parenthood (mother 14 years of age or younger), family living independently (without a strong support system). The toddlers participated in a center-based program emphasizing communication skills, while the mothers were employed as part-time aides at the center or in public school programs. Mothers were trained in specific competencies necessary for teacher aides, with special emphasis on appropriate and frequent child/adult interactions.
