Occupational Safety and Health Educational Resource Center, University of Alabama at Birmingham

The opportunities provided at the Deep South Educational Resource Center (ERC) for academic and continuing education studies in the fields of industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing, occupational and environmental medicine, and occupational safety and ergonomics were described. The Deep South ERC consisted of the Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Department of Industrial Engineering, College of Engineering, at Auburn University. A significant accomplishment during the period from 1988 through 1993 was the establishment of an occupational medicine residency program. During the project period the ERC graduated 115 students, 111 with master's and four with doctoral degrees. The continuing education program reached over 7,000 practicing occupational health and safety professionals.
