Analysis of Cable Stayed Bridges for Snapped Cables

The purpose of this report is to describe the computer program CSB which willperform both a static and a dynamic snapped cable analysis of a cable stayed bridge. In the static analysis the final deformed shape of the bridge and the member end loads (i.e., the axial forces in the cables and the axial forces, shear forces and moments in the tower and deck members) are computed assuming that the unbalanced forced which occur in the structure, when the forces in the snapped cables are removed, are applied slowly so that dynamic effects can be ignored. In the dynamic analysis the variation of the bridge displacements and the member end loads are computed as the bridge vibrates due to the sudden removal of the snapped cable forces. The results of the dynamic analyses which have been performed show that the the dynamic effects in the structure have a significant effect upon both the displacements and the member end loads compared to those obtained from the static analysis in which dynamic effects are ignored.
