Industry and Trade Summary: Telecommunications Equipment (October 1994)

The global telecommunications equipment industry is undergoing significanttransformation as regulatory authorities liberalize restrictions, governments privatize domestic service providers, equipment manufacturers introduce new technologies, and carriers offer new services. This report examines developments in the $127 billion worldwide telecommunications equipment industry during the 1990s, with reference to developments in the telecommunications service industry as appropriate. The report covers developments in both the U.S. and foreign telecommunications equipment industries and major telecommunications equipment markets. The foreign industries covered include those in Japan, Canada, and Western Europe. The report also addresses tariff and nontariff issues affecting trade in these products.
