Linking Transportation System Improvements to New Business Development in Eastern Washington.

An extensive highway, rail, barge and air system serves the transportation needs of eastern Washington's businesses and industries. Future public investment in this system will be guided by multiple criteria ranging from improved public safety to enhanced freight and passenger mobility. Among the most important of these criteria is the potential of system improvements to encourage economic development within the region. This report provides an assessment of how specific transportation system improvements are likely to impact location choices made by owners of new manufacturing, retail and service businesses. The analysis is primarily based on a telephone survey conducted for the Eastern Washington Intermodal Transportation Study (EWITS) by Washington State University's Social and Economic Sciences Research Center. Results from the completed interviews were analyzed by The Gill is Group and Washington State University's Department of Agricultural Economics.
