Mould Filling for Thin-Wall Metal Castings (Vormvulling bij Dunwandig MetaalGietwerk)

The mould filling process for manufacturing thin-wall metal castings is studied.A vertical thin-plate cavity (200x150x3mm) was filled via its bottom. An ingate system adapts a long vertical feeding tube to the plate cavity. The diameter of the tube is 24 mm, resulting in the same cross section as the plate. The effect of the ingate shape has been investigated on the flow pattern, liquid surface behavior and solidification process. Two ingate systems have been investigated by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques as well as by experiments.
