In this theses the authors present two solutions to the problem of performancedriven synthesis of digital systems. In chapter 1 the authors give an overview of past and present design automation systems. Four self contained CAD systems are described (selected on the basis of local usage). Chapter 2 is devoted to the issue of design trade-offs. Several 'high C' circuits are presented with different performance, power dissipation and area characteristics. At the end, the authors list additional sources of the imprecision of circuit delay models. Since most of the methods described in this thesis are based on integer programming (IP), chapter 3 will survey some IP methods. The concepts of possibilistic programming are also described. In chapter 4, the authors' first solution to the problem of performance driven synthesis (called the time-budgets method) will be introduced. The next chapter devoted to three successful applications of the possibilistic programming. In chapter 6, the implementation details and experimental results for all proposed algorithms are presented. In addition, the authors will describe their general PIP/PLP solver called FSOLVE.
