An analytical technique was developed to reliably measure totalreactiveisocyanate group (TRIG) in workplace atmosphere samples and the technique was adapted for use in a dichotomous sampler that would separately collect and measure TRIG in the vapor and condensed phases. Three derivatizing agents for TRIG measurement were evaluated: methoxy-phenylpiperazine (MOPIP), 9-methylanthracene (MAMA), and tryptamine (TRYP). Six commerical formulations of isocyanate oligomers/polyurethane prepolymers were assayed by derivation with MAMA followed by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet absorbance and flourescene detection. A dichotomous sampler consisting of an impactor inlet in series with two sections of annular denuder tubefollowed by a backup filter was used to study the partitioning of 4, 4'-diphenylmethane-diisocyanate (101688) between the vapor phase and condensed phase in an atmosphere of condensation aerosol from 24 to 335 micrograms/cubic meter. Test atmospheres of HDI vapor and of 1,6-hexamethylenediisocyanate (822060)/1,6-hexamethyl enediisocyanate-biuret (4035896) areosols were generated and sampled with the dichotomous sampler using MAMA reagent. The dichotomous sampler was used to measure vapor and condensed phase TRIG in workplace atmospheres.
