摘要

In a series of four, this is the second report on real time diagnosis ofdynamical systems. The series investigates a number of the problems underlying the computation of diagnoses for dynamical systems. The construction of a diagnostic system for dynamical systems imposes a large number of -still unsolved- problems. This is the second report in the series extending the first report in elaborating on the subject of using multiple system descriptions for diagnosis. The report describes a special type of approximation, i.e. the so-called abstraction. An abstraction is an approximation constructed carefully so that it is either logically stronger or weaker than the original system description. It follows that weak abstractions preserve soundness and strong abstractions preserve completeness. This fact can be used to speed up reasoning: At the refined level only candidates that seem to be valid explanations for system
