摘要

This project explores the application of infra-red lasers tracking andcommunication technology to vehicle-highway data transfer and automated vehicle control. Two products are investigated in the work: a communication system between the highway system and its vehicles which transmits digital information at a very high data rate using modulated laser beams, and an automated highway system in which the vehicle determines its location on the roadway by using laser beams to track reflectors places on lane border lines. The devices required in the vehicle for these two applications can be combined into a dual-purpose vehicle terminal. These applications are suggested by the possibility of Directed and Focusing Lasers (DAFLs) that are described here and that can achieve extremely fast tracking response times by operating without moving parts. The devices can, in theory, be manufactured in bulk at a relatively low cost.
