The purpose of an Agricultural Waste Management System (AWMS) is to control anduse by-products of agricultural production in a manner that sustains or enhances the quality of air, water, soil, plant, and animal resources. Important to the success in achieving this purpose is adequate design and construction of the AWMS. At least as important to a system's success are its proper operation and maintenance (O&M). Safety is always coupled with proper O&M as an essential and integral part. This chapter describes actions that would be taken by the operator of an AWMS or choices that would be made by the decisionmaker.
