The Run-Off-Road Collision Avoidance Using IVHS Countermeasures program is to211u001eaddress the single vehicle crash problem through application of technology to 211u001eprevent and/or reduce the severity of these crashes. This report describes and 211u001edocuments the supplemental analysis sequence completed for Task 1. This 211u001esupplemental analysis sequence was conducted to characterize the problem of run-211u001eoff-road crashes in heavy trucks, as compared with the passenger vehicle analysis 211u001econducted in the original Task 1 effort. The sequence included three distinct 211u001eanalysis types which may be summarized as follows: Statistical Analyses-The GES 211u001eand FARS national crash databases were examined to provide an updated estimate of 211u001eproblem size and to establish characteristics of the nation crash population. 211u001eClinical Analyses-A sample of case reports from the NTSB crash database were 211u001eevaluated to determine crash causation factors and to establish the circumstances 211u001ein which these crashes occur. Engineering Analyses-A subset of the NASS CSD case 211u001ereports were examined to establish the dynamic scenarios associated with the 211u001eclinical sample. These scenarios were represented as situation trees, which 211u001edelineated the specific combination of driver, vehicle, and environmental factors 211u001ein crash and driver response to critical events.
