Cultural Resource Investigations Near White Crack, Island-in-the-Sky District,211 Canyonlands National Park, Utah

This document is the final technical report of archeological investigations in211u001ethe White Crack Area, Island-in-the-Sky District, Canyonlands National Park, 211u001eUtah. The project involved inventory of 726 acres on and below the White Rim, 211u001elimited testing of eight features on five sites, and reanalysis of an existing 211u001elithic collection recovered from a large open site by the National Park Service. 211u001eAlmost all of the recorded sites were lithic scatters or lithic source sites 211u001edating from the Archaic through the Late Prehistoric/Protohistoric periods. The 211u001einventory revealed a relatively high site density that appears to be related to 211u001ethe presence of an access route between the White Rim and the subrim canyons and 211u001ebenchlands, as well as the abundance of numerous Cedar Mesa Chert and Chalcedony 211u001esources on the benches below the White Rim. Research issues are identified and 211u001eaddressed in three major problem domains: Chronology and Cultural Affiliation, 211u001eSettlement Patterns, and Environmental Adaptation.
