Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS): Information Security Analysis

The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program is the application of211u001einformation technologies (computing, sensing, and communications) to surface 211u001etransportation. Because of a reliance on these technologies, ITS will become 211u001eincreasingly dependent on information security. This document presents the 211u001eresults from an information security analysis that was based on the National ITS 211u001eArchitecture. The ITS information security analysis comprised three assessments 211u001eto identify and characterize the various threats to (1) the ITS subsystems, (2) 211u001etheir exchange of information, and (3) their supporting communications 211u001einfrastructure. The assessments also provide recommended solutions (i.e., 211u001esecurity services) that can be used to reduce or eliminate identified threats and 211u001eto better protect ITS. While focusing on the threats and their impacts to ITS 211u001esecurity, this report also provides necessary background information and a 211u001egeneral understanding of information security. It addresses common information 211u001esecurity issues as well as those that pertain specifically to ITS. The 211u001econclusions and recommendations from this report address increasing information 211u001esecurity awareness within the ITS community, the development of secure ITS 211u001eoperations, and the issue of future security activities within the ITS domain.
