Single Crystal Modelling and Optimisation of Model Parameters

Many single crystal growth experiments have been done by M. Kaira and the resultshave been well document in his Master's thesis. His data has not been previously used for model fitting and therefore it was done in this work. Single crystals of sucrose were allowed to grow under almost constant conditions in pure solutions and the crystal size in three directions was measured as a function of time. A computer model was developed for the calculation of crystal growth. The model calculated the growth of the second largest axis; this was selected as the characteristic dimension. The goal for the modelling was to find out how well the calculated crystal growths followed the experimental trends. Growth was assumed to be both surface reaction and diffusion controlled. Surface reaction was assumed to be a first order reaction. The arrhenius equation was used to describe the temperature behavior of the surface reaction. Diffusion calculation was based on the use of Frossling equation.
