The aim of this paper is to quantify the influence of soil structure on the211u001ebehavior of natural soils using the disturbed state concept (DSC) proposed by 211u001eDesai. The behavior of the fully adjusted state is chosen to be that of the 211u001ecorresponding soil in a reconstituted condition so that the disturbance function 211u001eis a direct measure of soil structure. A new DSC compression model is proposed. 211u001eThis model is able to describe the compression behavior of structured soils under 211u001eloading, swelling and reloading. Special versions of the proposed model are also 211u001edescribed for situations (1) where the compression behavior of the corresponding 211u001ereconstituted soils is linear in the e-lnp(prime) space and (2) where the 211u001ecompression is one-dimensional. The ability of the proposed model and its various 211u001eversions to describe the compression behavior of structured soils has been 211u001everified. A discussion on quantifying the influence of soil structure via the DSC 211u001eis also made.
