Increases in Levels of Breathable Fine Particulates Due to the Application ofCarpet Fresheners in a Suburban Home

The paper gives results of a study in which two carpet fresheners were applied tothe carpet of a suburban home. Data are presented on increases in background concentrations of breathable fine particulates 1.0 micrometer in diameter and smaller, both before and after vacumming. Information on particulate buildup due to periodic reapplications is also presented, and the buildup patterns are tracked over a period of months. The data show that there is a measurable increase in breathable fines after each application, but that the increase is transitory, lasting from 24 to 48 hours.
