In response to a request from Nederlander Arena Management, National Institute211u001efor Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigators conducted a health 211u001ehazard evaluation (HHE) at the Crown Coliseum during the U.S. Hot Rod Monster 211u001eTruck and Motorcross Show in Cincinnati, Ohio. NIOSH investigators conducted 211u001epersonal and area air monitoring on January 23 and 24, 1998, to evaluate 211u001eexposures to carbon monoxide (CO) and volatile organic composites (VOCs), and to 211u001emeasure noise levels. Personal monitoring was conducted on two ushers and two 211u001esecurity personnel during each show. The monitoring was conducted over the course 211u001eof the 4-hour work shifts. Monitoring as also conducted to assess typical crown 211u001eexposures to CO and noise during the 2 1/4 hour shows. The monster trucks burn 211u001emethanol and do not have exhaust suppression systems, while the motorcycles burn 211u001ea mixture of high octane gasoline and racing engine oil and are equipped with 211u001eexhaust suppression by systems and noise silencers.
