This document presents the results of an investigation of remote sensing211u001etechnologies applicable to the problem of remote aircraft icing potential 211u001edetection. The long-term goal is to develop an aircraft mounted sensor capable of 211u001edetecting dangerous levels of supercooled liquid water tens of kilometers ahead 211u001eof the aircraft. Instruments capable of mapping range profiles of cloud liquid 211u001ewater content and mean particle size were investigated, specifically 211u001emultifrequency radar and lidar (light detection and ranging). Multifrequency 211u001eradar proved to be the most promising method for detecting liquid water content 211u001eand parameters related to particle size. Backscattered power measurements at one, 211u001etwo, and three frequencies were input to a neural network trained to estimate 211u001eliquid water content and two sizing parameters.
