Many governments consider Business Development to be the area in which PeaceCorps can be of great assistance. They recognize that small business serves as the underpinning for economic growth and employment-creation efforts, contributing to both economic and social development goals. The development of small businesses contributes to the transition from a subsistence or centrally planned economy to a market economy. Small businesses provide jobs to nonfarmers, teach nonfarm skills, and provide goods and services to make remaining farms more prosperous and productive. They enhance community stability and provide income and jobs to enable people to remain in the community and have productive lives.
