A one-year landfill leachate recirculation demonstration project was conducted in211u001ea 20-acre cell at the Broome County, NY, Nanticoke Landfill using a retrofit 211u001ebioreactor trench design concept to introduce landfill leachate to the 211u001esurrounding refuse mass. Over the course of the project, 1.1 million gallons of 211u001elandfill leachate were distributed through the bioreactor trench, substantially 211u001eincreasing the moisture content (approaching 70%) of the surrounding municipal 211u001esolid waste. Experimental results also indicate that the bioreactor trench 211u001efunctioned as an in-situ anaerobic bioreactor, effectively treating landfill 211u001eleachate retained within the trench due to decreasing refuse permeability and 211u001eenhanced leachate hydraulic retention time. A significant and steady decline was 211u001enoted in landfill leachate chemical oxygen demand (COD), volatile fatty acid 211u001e(VFA), and total organic carbon (TOC), suggesting that the rapid biological 211u001estabilization of the refuse within the 20-acre demonstration area was influenced 211u001eby the bioreactor trench. Characterization of the resulting landfil gas indicated 211u001ethat optimum methane:carbon dioxide ratios were measured in all experimental gas 211u001ewells and in the bioreactor trench. No apparent enhancement of landfill gas 211u001eproduction was noted in promixity to the bioreactor trench.
