Seismic data consist of traces, which contain information about a seismic event,211u001ebut in some period of time the traces may be just noise. A trace which contains 211u001eseismic information, is called a seismic signal. Seismic signals consist of 211u001eseveral typically short energy bursts, called phases, exhibiting several patterns 211u001ein terms of dominant frequency, amplitude and polarization. Amongst others, a 211u001esignificant phase is the S-phase. We present a fast algorithm to detect the S-211u001ephase in a three-component seismic signal. This new approach is a combination of 211u001etraditional S-phase detection methods from seismology and the discrete wavelet 211u001etransform. Stability and correctness of the algorithm will be proved and results 211u001ewill be presented to demonstrate the algorithm.
