Process Monitoring and Sheet Metal Formability in Pressing of Box-ShapedComponents

A trapezoidal press tool is developed nd instrumented to study process monitoringand to asses sheet formability in operations which are more similar to industrial. The industrial operations, on which the attention is focused in this study, are those resulting in box-shaped automotive components such as the so-called side impact box. This investigation shows that high quality process data/information acquisition is possible, only if the forces are measured locally. Local process monitoring enables corrective measures after failure or adaptive process control in order to conduct a successful forming operation.
