CDC recommends that all states and territories conduct case surveillance for211u001ehuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection as an extension of current acquired 211u001eimmunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) surveillance activities. The expansion of 211u001enational surveillance to include both HIV infection and AIDS cases is a necessary 211u001eresponse to the impact of advances in antiretroviral therapy, the implementation 211u001eof new HIV treatment guidelines, and the increased need for epidemiologic data 211u001eregarding persons at all stages of HIV disease. Expanded surveillance will 211u001eprovide additional data about HIV-infected populations to enhance local, state, 211u001eand federal efforts to prevent HIV transmission, improve allocation of resources 211u001efor treatment services, and assist in evaluating the impact of public health 211u001einterventions.
