Wind Effects on the Lateral Motion of Wake Vortices

This report examines the influence of crosswind and other factors on the behavior211u001eof wake vortices between parallel runways. The measurements used in the analysis 211u001ecame from landing (1976-77) and takeoff (1980) operations at O'Hare International 211u001eAirport. As expected, wake vortices are observed to transport with the ambient 211u001ewind; therefore, dangerous wake vortex encounters can be avoided on parallel 211u001erunways with suitable assignment of aircraft to the two runways. The analyses of 211u001ethe report were carried out in the mid 1980s and serve to document the O'Hare 211u001elanding and takeoff data based and how they can be used. The status of the 211u001eacoustic and in situ wake vortex sensors is updated to the late 1990's.
