Evaluation of Approximate Original Contour Variances and Postmining Land Uses in211 Virginia

The Office of Surface Mining's (OSM) Big Stone Gap Field Office (BSGFO), in211u001econjunction with the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, Division 211u001eof Mined Land Reclamation (DMME/DMLR), has prepared this oversight report on 211u001eportions of the Virginia surface mining program. This doument addresses 211u001emountaintop operations, that is, those surface mines that remove all or a large 211u001eportion of a coal seam or seams running through the upper fraction of a mountain 211u001eor ridge. This report describes various characteristics of land after mining in 211u001eterms of elevation changes, creaton of valley fills, creation of level sections, 211u001eand other general descriptive information. The issue is how those 211u001echaracteristics, either individually or in combination, are used in determining 211u001eif AOC has been achieved.
