This report describes the ScanSpec project at the Department of IR Systems at the211u001eDefense Research Establishment (FOA) in Linkoping, Sweden. The purpose of the 211u001eproject was to build an imaging spectrometer. It has been done by connecting a 211u001enarrow-angle telescope to a fast FTIR spectrometer and by rotating a mirror in 211u001efront of the telescope. This way, spectra of IR-radiation from different 211u001edirections are acquired. The mirror is used to scan a scene to acquire a spectral 211u001eimage, that is, an image for which each pixel consists of a whole spectrum. The 211u001ereport includes an overview of imaging spectrometers for the IR-region and of the 211u001emilitary use of spectral images. the development of the ScanSpec imaging 211u001espectrometer is described and the first measurements are presented. The report is 211u001ewritten for anyone interested in spectral images and imaging spectrometers and 211u001especifically the ScanSpec imaging spectrometer. The reader is assumed to have 211u001esome university level knowledge about physics in general.
