The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is investigating iron and211u001esteel foundries to identify and quantify hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) emitted 211u001efrom cupolas; electric arc furnaces; and pouring, cooling and shakedown 211u001eoperations of sand mold casting processes. General Motors Corporation, Saginaw 211u001eCasting Operations (GMC), Saginaw, Michigan was selected by the EPA as the host 211u001efacility at which to (1) characterize HAP emissions from cupolas that are 211u001econtrolled by wet scrubbers, and (2) assess wet scrubber performance in 211u001econtrolling HAP emissions from cupolas. This report presents the results of a 211u001emanual emissions testing program to characterize emissions from a cupola and 211u001eassess the performance of the wet scrubber in controlling HAP emissions. Testing 211u001ewas conducted at the cupola wet scrubber inlet and outlet to determine air 211u001eemissions of particulate matter (PM) and metal HAPs; and at the cupola wet 211u001escrubber outlet to determine organic HAPs consisting of dibenzo-p-dioxins and 211u001epolychlorinated dibenzodurans (PCDDs/PCDFs) and semi-volatile organic hazardous 211u001eair pollutants (SVOHAPs), and volatile organic hazardous air pollutants (VOHAPs). 211u001eThe data may be used by the EPA as potential Maximum Achievable Control 211u001eTechnology (MACT) floor technology for cupolas.
