The Office of Law Enforcement Standards (OLES) of the National Institute of211u001eStandards and Technology (NIST) furnishes technical support to the National 211u001eInstitute of Justice (NIJ) program to strengthen law enforcement and criminal 211u001ejustice in the United States. OLESs function is to conduct research that will 211u001eassist law enforcement and criminal justice agencies in the selection and 211u001eprocurement of quality equipment. OLES is: (1) Subjecting existing equipment to 211u001elaboratory testing and evaluation, and (2) conducting research leading to the 211u001edevelopment of several series of documents, including national standards, user 211u001eguides, and technical reports. This document covers research conducted by OLES 211u001eunder the sponsorship of the National Institute of Justice. Additional reports as 211u001ewell as other documents are being issued under the OLES program.
