The 1971 San Fernando Earthquake in California caused highway bridges to collapse211u001ebecause of excessive longitudinal movement at expansion joints and supports. 211u001eSince then, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has installed 211u001elongitudinal cable restrainers to prevent such collapse. In the study presented 211u001ein this report, two existing design methods, the Caltrans and AASHTO methods, 211u001ewere evaluated for simply-supported bridges.
