This document summarizes a multi-year research project in the development of a211u001edetailed methodology to assess and improve the functional reliability of 211u001eequipment systems in critical facilities following earthquakes. The overall 211u001eprogram is intended to be used by engineers, building officials, owners, and 211u001eother individuals interested in assessing and improving the capacity of a 211u001efacility to provide critical services. Current building, design standards are 211u001eprimarily intended to preserve life safety through maintenance of the structural 211u001eintegrity of buildings and critical safety systems, such as fire protection. Some 211u001egoverning bodies recognize that critical facilities, such as hospitals, are 211u001erequired to not only survive an earthquake without structural failure but also to 211u001ebe operational during, and immediately following, a seismic event. An approach to 211u001eimprove the reliability of equipment systems that is flexible enough to be used 211u001ein many types of facilities and does not require personnel with seismic expertise 211u001eis the goal of this methodology.
