The objectives of this program are (1) demonstrate the wastewater capabilities of211u001ebiofilters, (2) determine effluent quality, (3) evaluate filter performance, (4) 211u001eidentify operating parameters that achieve effluent standards, and (5) calculate 211u001elife-cycle system costs. This project tested three skid-mounted biofilters at 211u001epilot-scale for organic substrate (BOD5 and TSS) removal, nitrification, and 211u001edenitrification at the JSTP. The overall average effluent concentrations for both 211u001eBOD5 and TSS during the entire study were 17 mg/1. The total nitrogen 211u001econcentration was 6 mg/1. Shock loadings did not have a significant effect on the 211u001eeffluent concentrations of these parameters. Four wet weather simulation tests 211u001eshowed that that the biofilters maintained a relatively high level of treatment 211u001eduring peak weather flows. TSS removed ranged from 88% to 97% and TKN removed was 211u001ebetween 72% and 87%.
