U.S. Intests in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region have a clear211u001eimpact on the economic, social, and political well being of the United States. 211u001eFirst, our interests are linked to seeing the evolution of stronger democracies 211u001ein the region. Second, our economies are closely linked as 49% of all U.S. 211u001eexports. Third, due to our close geographic proximity, there is strong cross-211u001eborder pressure that often results in illegal immigration and the spread of 211u001ecommunicable diseases. Fourth, protection of the hemisphere's natural resource 211u001ebase enhances our quality of life in the United States, and its destruction, as 211u001ewe saw during the fires in Mexico, can affect the quality of the air, land and 211u001ewater in our country.
