摘要

The Southern Shipbuilding Corporation (SSC) site is an abandoned ship repair facility in Slidell, Louisiana, that operated from 1919 to 1993. Ship hulls were painted and cleaned, and the waste from the vessels was deposited in impoundments next to Bayou Bonfouca. The site consists of two impoundments containing ship waste high in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a graving dock where ships' hulls were treated with an anti-fouling paint containing tributyktin, and a paint shed which contained drums of paints and solvents. In addition, asbestos-containing material (ACM) has been found on the site's ground surface. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Louisiana Department of Environment Quality (LDEQ) investigated the site from 1992-1993 and found that the impoundments' contaminants had leaked into the bayou and migrated into the shallow ground water (2-25 feet below the ground surface) and subsurface soils (7.7-30.7 feet). The site was placed on the National Priority List in May 1995. Excavation and incineration of site sediments started in October of 1995. The ash from incineration, along with marginally contaminated soil, has been disposed of on-site under two feet of clean fill.
