The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey(MEPS) is the third in a series of nationallyrepresentative surveys of medical care use and expenditure sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). For the first time in a national expenditure survey, the l996 MEPS included a detailed collection of information on prescription medicines obtained from pharmacy providers frequented by household sampled persons. The information was collected by means of a linked survey of pharmacy providers. This report describes the procedures adopted to collect and edit these prescription drug data for public release.
