Effects of Managed Care on Physicians' Practices;Final rept. 30 Sep 95-29 Sep 98

Objective: To analyze the effects of HMO market penetration and growth on several characteristics of physicians' practices: earnings, hours worked, patient loads, satisfaction from medical practice, and the degree of ethical comfort with managed care arrangements. Data: Two surveys of younger physicians: the 1991 Young Physician Survey of a nationally representative sample of about 6,000 physicians who were under age 45 and had been in practice between two and nine years, and a resurvey in 1997 of a subsample of about 1,500 physicians who responded to the 1991 survey and had been practicing in one of the 75 largest metropolitan statistical areas in 1991. Response rates were 69% and 74% respectively. Methods: Statistical estimation of multivariate regression models based primarily on economic theories of physicians' labor market behavior.
