Redesigning an Ongoing National Household Survey: Methodological Issues

This report has two purposes. First, it provides information on the impact of the redesign on the estimates produced from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA). Researchers and other users of NHSDA data will find this information helpful in interpreting NHSDA estimates, particularly if they are interested in comparing data from the new design with data from the old design. The second purpose is to present research findings of interest to survey methodologists involved in designing and conducting surveys of all types, not just surveys of substance abuse. Although these findings taken as a whole could be considered a case study in the redesign of a major ongoing survey, several of the chapters in this report present important research findings that are applicable to many types of surveys.
