To determine whether grandparents are at risk for depressive symptoms, poorer health, and/or decreased use of preventive care services, when they are caring for grandchildren in their homes. A striking feature of the American demographic landscape is the growth in grandparent-headed households. While grandparents may derive pleasure and positive challenge in having a grandchild in residence, studies have consistently documented social isolation and financial, physical and emotional hardship among care giving grandparents, as well as limited time and energy for self-care.
